Post-Op Care Instructions

Your recovery journey begins the moment your treatment is complete. Following these post-operative instructions carefully is essential to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

After your surgery, it’s important to arrange a ride home with an adult that you trust. Sedation or anesthesia from the procedure may impair your ability to drive or make decisions. Once home, plan to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid any strenuous activities. Having someone at home with you to supervise for 24 hours post-surgery is strongly recommended to ensure your safety and comfort.

Managing Discomfort and Pain

It’s normal to experience some discomfort following surgery, but proper pain management can help you manage more comfortably. Here are some tips to help:

  • If prescribed, take pain medication as directed
  • Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate minor discomfort
  • To reduce swelling, apply ice packs to the affected area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24-48 hours

Bleeding Control

Some bleeding is normal immediately after surgery. To manage this, gently bite down on gauze pads for the recommended duration, replacing them as needed. Keeping your head elevated can also help reduce bleeding. Avoid actions like spitting, using straws, or smoking.

Eating and Drinking

For the first few days, stick to a diet of soft foods and liquids to avoid irritation at the surgical site. Great options include soups, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and yogurt. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods that could disturb healing. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, but avoid alcohol and caffeine during your recovery.

Oral Hygiene

Careful oral hygiene is essential after surgery. Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the surgical area to prevent irritation. If prescribed, use a medicated mouth rinse. Alternatively, you can opt for warm saltwater rinses to keep your mouth clean. Avoid using commercial mouthwashes unless directed by your practitioner.

Activity Restrictions

During your recovery, avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. These activities can increase blood flow and disrupt healing. Gradually resume your normal routine as you feel more comfortable, but listen to your body and avoid overexertion.

Medications

Take all prescribed medications as directed, including antibiotics, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatory medications. It’s crucial to complete the full course of antibiotics, even if you start feeling better, to prevent infection. Follow the dosage instructions carefully and reach out to us if you experience any adverse effects.

Follow-Up Care

Before you leave the office, our team will provide guidance on scheduling follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress. Watch for symptoms that may indicate complications, such as excessive bleeding, severe pain unrelieved by medication, or signs of infection like fever or swelling. If you notice any of these issues, contact our office immediately or seek emergency care.

By following these post-operative instructions, you’re setting yourself up for a successful recovery. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns—we’re just a phone call away.
