GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION

Benefits of GTR

Periodontal or gum disease causes bone loss around teeth, which can increase the chances for tooth loss. Once a tooth has been lost, the supporting jaw bone has a tendency to disappear over time.

This may make wearing dentures uncomfortable, and insufficient bone can render placing dental implants impossible.

GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION (GTR) RESTORES THE NATURAL CONTOURS OF YOUR MOUTH

Associated with existing teeth: Generally, osseous surgery is used to treat and arrest chronic periodontal disease. Although this is still an effective treatment modality, new and more sophisticated procedures, known as “Guided tissue Regeneration Procedures” are used routinely today to replace the previously lost supporting structures of your teeth. This technique involves rebuilding of lost bone around a tooth or teeth. Bone grafting materials are placed in the area of bone loss and covered by a membrane. Over the next 6 months, the bone and periodontal supporting structures will re-establish.

At the time of tooth extraction: Bone grafting at the time of tooth extraction preserves the remaining jawbone, and minimizes shrinkage of the gum tissue. This provides for a more esthetic tooth replacement for either an implant crown or a fixed bridge.

Ridge Augmentation (Areas lacking teeth): Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is resorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor bone quality and quantity and the bone becomes unsuitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants, unless preliminary bone grafting is done.

Today, we have the ability to grow bone where needed. This not only gives Dr. Ross the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore excellent functionality and esthetics.

Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, resorption, congenital defects or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or your own bone is taken from the jaw.
